Data assimilation for surface and soil variables in the global semi-Lagrangian NWP model

This paper considers the data assimilation schemes for the surface temperature, relative humidity, and the soil variables (including surface soil temperature, deep soil temperature, surface and deep soil water content). Variational assimilation is used for temperature analysis at 2 m depths, while the analysis of 2-meter relative humidity is carried out via optimal interpolation method. The implementation of these schemes along with the improvement of the NWP model resulted in reduction of the 2-meter temperature and relative humidity analysis and forecast errors.
