Optimal design of a hydroturbine passage and flow analysis based on CFD methods

An overview of modern methods for optimal design of hydroturbine blading systems is presented. Previously proposed system for automatic optimal design of Francis turbine runner is generalized by implementing a parameterization for blade thickness. The problem of simultaneous improvement of several characteristics of the turbine flow passage at specified operation regimes is considered. As an example, the problem of designing a runner with high efficiency characteristics at best efficiency point and a low level of pressure pulsations caused by vortex rope precession at part-load regime, is solved. In order to verify the obtained results, unsteady vortex rope simulations are carried out for initial and the optimal runner designs.
