Calculation of sea surface displacements in a tsunami source area caused by instantaneous vertical deformation of the seabed due to an underwater earthquake

A new method for numerical calculation of fluid surface response to a local instantaneous bottom deformation is considered. The problem has been formulated for an ideal incompressible liquid layer of slowly varying depth. Solution is based on the electrostatic analogy in the potential theory and presented as an iteration procedure. Numerical analysis has shown that nonhydrostatic effect is an important factor in tsunami modeling when typical dimension of the seismic source is small and comparable with the ocean depth.
