Investigation of various criteria for optical images series evaluation in technique of strain sensor of integral type

A technique for assessment of cyclic deformation using aluminum foil sensors glued onto the specimen surface was addressed. The fatigue tests for carbon fiber reinforced polymers were carried out. A digital single-lens reflex camera mounted onto an optical microscope was used for capturing the images of sensors in order to reflect the strain induced relief. The relief was numerically estimated using various informative parameters in order to obtain the cyclic deformation assessment of the composite. We use the parameters that needed for evaluation of the quality of images, as well as the ones needed for the quantification of the surface relief on images. They were investigated for determination of sensitivity to negative external influences, in particular of digital noise, blur and compression. The original images were subjected to Gaussian noise, Gaussian blur and JPEG compression with different degrees of impact and then the set of informative parameters were calculated. The aim of the present study is to find the parameter that makes the process of estimation for sensor images to be the most sensitive to deformation and the least sensitive to distortions. The results are discussed for applications of this technique for the development of the Structural Health Monitoring method used for polymer based structures reinforced by carbon fiber.
