Aspects of snow and soil modelling in the operational short range weather prediction models of the German weather service

In short range weather forecasts there is on average a very high quality of the prediction of surface pressure fields. Nevertheless, the prediction of other parameters, as, e. g., near surface temperatures, often shows untolerable large errors. The paper deals with the improvement of near surface temperature predictions by modification of some aspects of soil and snow modelling.
