Introduction

The special issue of "Computational Technologies'' journal is published to mark the opening of Russian-German Advanced Research Workshop on Computational Science and High Performance Computing in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok. Each of its three parts is devoted to the proceedings of Workshop and contains the papers, which were provided and edited by the authors, chosen after the careful selection and reviewing. The Workshop is organized by Institute of Computational Technologies SB RAS (Novosibirsk, Russia) and High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (Stuttgart, Germany). The objective of the event is to discuss the latest results in computational science and to develop the close cooperation between Russian and German specialists in the above-mentioned field. The main directions of Workshop are associated with the problems of computational hydrodynamics, application of mathematical methods to the development of new generation of materials, environment protection problems, development of algorithmic, software and hardware support for high-performance computation, and designing modern facilities for visualization of computational modelling results. The importance of Workshop topics has been confirmed by its participants including the representatives of major research organizations engaged in the solution of most complex problems of mathematical modelling, development of new algorithms, programs and key elements of new informational technologies. Among Russian participants there are the researchers of Institutes of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences: Institute of Computational Technologies, Institute of Computational Mathematics and Mathematical Geophysics, Institute of Computational Simulation; the largest Russian Nuclear Centres: All-Russian Institute of Experimental Physics and All-Russian Institute of Technical Physics; well-known centres in Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, and Novosibirsk Universities. Among German participants there are the heads and leading specialists of High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS) (University of Stuttgart), Institute of Hydraulic Fluid Mechanics (University of Stuttgart), Institute of Aerodynamics and Gasdynamics (University of Stuttgart), Center for High Performance Computing (ZHR) (Dresden University of Technology), Institute of Aerodynamics RWTH (Aachen), Institute of Applied Mathematics (University of Freiburg i. Br.), Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (University of Tubingen), Institute of Fluid Mechanics, Faculty of Engineering Sciences (University of Erlangen - Nurnberg). It must be emphasized that the traditional collaboration between Siberian and German specialists in computational science has a long, steady and successful history. The stability of such relations and their prospects are based on the active participation of young scientists, which prompted the organizers to establish the youth section of Workshop. This year its participants will be recent postgraduate students of Novosibirsk University and Novosibirsk Technical University and young researchers of Institute of Computational Technologies. The workshop programme is wide and provides state-of-the-art scientific papers, opportunities to learn about the latest results of other SB RAS research institutions, informal meetings of participants, discussions about the future of computational sciences and informational technologies. We hope that such scientific Workshops will have brilliant future and the topics of future workshops will be characterized by the same actuality and width. In conclusion, on behalf of Organizing Committee let me express my gratitude to all the participants of Workshop and wish them successful and fruitful work.
