Stress-state of rock massif weakened by square-section development

A stress-strain state near a horizontal square-section development has been investigated by the finite-element method. The distribution of principal stresses has been obtained in the vicinity of the corner point, where the stress field has an integrable singularity. It has been found that tensile stresses, which occur at the top of the development, often disintegrate rocks, since the latter possess poor resistance to tension.
