A choice of the reference surface in plate and shell equations

An influence of the reference surface placement on the solution of plates and shells deformation problem is investigated. A problem on a beam bending by the central concentrated force is considered. For some types of boundary conditions the reference surface placement strongly influences the value of a deflection in the center of the beam. The $C^0$-formulation of isoparametric shell element with a possibility of the reference surface placement control is developed. The use of such element allows to receive a correct pattern of deformation for various types of boundary conditions. It is underlined that some problems on plates and shells deformation cannot be solved using the elements, which formulation does not stipulate the reference surface placement control.
