Variational data assimilation in real time

A brief description of the lecture notes on data assimilation given to the participants of the Young Scientists School on Computational Information Technologies for Environmental Sciences "CITES-2005" (Novosibirsk, March 13--23, 2005) is provided. New original algorithms of successive data assimilation are presented. The decomposition and splitting techniques used in these algorithms are based on variational principles. One such algorithm was proposed to the students for practical training.
