Roots of Russian-German cooperation in computational science

This paper comments on the first steps of cooperation between Russian and German scientists in the field of computational science, established by the Institute of Computational Technology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk and the High Performance Computing Center of the University of Stuttgart in Germany. After a relatively long period of initial individual scientific contacts, the first Russian-German Advanced Research Workshop on Computational Science and High Performance Computing was held at the Institute of Computational Technologies September 30 to October 2, 2003. The contributions to this workshop, which cover a wide range of topics, are briefly reviewed in in this article.
