Leveling a capillary ridge by external pressure

Formation of capillary ridges is a typical effect in the case of a flow of thin viscous films over a topographical feature. This process is studied using a two-dimensional model describing the slow motion of a thin viscous liquid layer flowing over complex topography. The model is based on the Navier - Stokes equations. The capillary ridges generated by the substrate features can be optimally leveled by using the external pressure. In this work it is shown how to construct the external pressure function to optimally smooth the capillary ridges. Numerical results for some model problems are presented.
