Numerical modeling of heating of a metal target by the femtosecond laser pulses in a gas environment

We present the results of numerical modeling of a thermal exchange between a metal target (platinum) and an ambient gas (argon) under the action of the femtosecond laser pulses on the target. Dynamics of gas motion is described by the Navier-Stokes equations and the heating process is governed by the heat flow equation which takes the phase transitions into account. It is shown that gas breakdown in the focus of the laser beam leading to the subsequent heat transfer from the hot gas to the target can explain the experimentally observed effect of an abnormal heating of the metal targets. A finite-difference algorithm for solving the problem is described and we present the analysis of the physical processes which take place under the interaction of the ultra short laser pulses with metals in the presence of the ambient gas.
